LISTS Ways to get through a frustrating task

  • I take a break.
  • I pretend to be in jail.
  • I think how happy I will be to have it done.
  • I remind myself why I'm grateful to be ABLE to do this thing (that doesn't always work, but sometimes).
  • I go outside for a couple minutes.
  • I yell and jump up and down for 30 seconds.
  • I remind myself that I'm doing future-me a favor.
  • I slow down.
  • I start over.
  • I put on upbeat music.

ONE-SENTENCE JOURNAL From: Gratitude for things that annoy me sometimes

I am grateful for time spent alone in the car in traffic, while waiting for people and appointments, and any other time that presents for me a blank slate for thinking.

ONE-SENTENCE JOURNAL From: Gratitude for things that annoy me sometimes

I am grateful that Russell doesn't care about home design, because it means I can do whatever I want. I am grateful for his infrequent and sudden contributions too, because it helps to focus my plans.

INSPIRATION BOARD

Say yes if your instincts are strong, even if everyone around you disagrees. Decide whether you want to be liked or admired. Decide if fitting in is more important than finding out what you’re doing here. Believe in kissing.

— Eve Ensler (con't)

INSPIRATION BOARD

Cherish your solitude. Take trains by yourself to places you have never been. Sleep out alone under the stars. Learn how to drive a stick shift. Go so far away that you stop being afraid of not coming back. Say no when you don’t want to do something.

— Eve Ensler

These might help with figuring out how to start making lists - what should be on my lists?

ONE-SENTENCE JOURNAL From: The Process

I think my happiness project will require some accommodation for sad things; I wonder if I don't manufacture my OWN sad things, if I don't spend enough time reveling in them otherwise. It is something I must consider.

LISTS Things that make me happy (initial musings)

  • Finding new places to eat or shop
  • Exploring my neighborhood (work and home)

Reasons to appreciate humanity. They might not all be true, but it is a wonderful reminder of the things that people do for each other everyday, everywhere.

ONE-SENTENCE JOURNAL From: The Process

Finished reading the book yesterday; now I'm defining my own journey. Starting with what I want my life to look like. What is perfect-world-Elizabeth like?

PERSONAL COMMANDMENTS Elizabeth's Rules and Reminders

  1. You can do anything, but you can't do everything.
  2. If you're not happy, change something.
  3. Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.
  4. If you want to take the credit, you have to also take the blame. If you avoid the blame, you can't take credit.
  5. You have a greater effect on the people around you than you're aware.
  6. It doesn't take much to make someone's day.
  7. People like you best when you like yourself.
  8. You are the architect, designer, and builder of your own life.
  9. I am awesome. If I am feeling not-awesome, I'm doing something wrong.
  10. Balance. Balance. Balance.
  11. Action begets inspiration, not vice versa.
  12. Turn annoyances into pleasures whenever possible. Example: moments spent waiting (for someone, in traffic, for an appointment) are moments of guiltless freedom. Use them to let your mind wander.

INSPIRATION BOARD

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.

— Joseph Chilton Pearce

INSPIRATION BOARD

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

— Samuel Beckett

There is a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in.

— Leonard Cohen
